The problem is that these cosmetics were generally toxic and based on heavy metals like lead. As a result, the skin ends up deteriorating and aging prematurely. Trade with Egypt would introduce makeup to Greece and Rome. But it was not until the 13th century that its use was felt further north in Europe.
Depending on the times and societies, various trends have emerged. For example, in the past it was common among the nobility to apply powder to whiten their skin. It was a way of showing one’s status and dissociating oneself from the rest of the people, who were more inclined to have dark skin with their exposure to the Sun.
